Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips Launches Primary Challenge to President Biden
Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, a 54-year-old multimillionaire, has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2024 presidential race by launching a primary challenge against President Joe Biden. While Phillips and Biden share similar policy positions, the challenge is centered around the age of the 80-year-old President.
Phillips, who has represented the suburbs of Minneapolis since 2019, has been vocal in urging Biden not to run for another term, citing concerns about his ability to defeat Donald Trump a second time. Despite praising Biden for his decency and compassion, Phillips believes it’s time for a new generation of dynamic Democrats to step up.
The businessman, who once ran the gelato company Talenti, made his official announcement on the filing deadline for New Hampshire’s primary. While Biden will not be on the primary ballot in the Granite State, Phillips and other prominent Democrats like Marianne Williamson may have an opportunity to perform well.
Polls have shown that a majority of Democrats are hesitant about Biden running in 2024 due to concerns about his age. However, Biden’s nomination seems inevitable as most elected Democrats, major donors, and party operatives have backed him.
Despite his challenge to Biden, Phillips has had nothing but good things to say about the President in recent weeks. He emphasized that his campaign is not in opposition to Biden but rather a call for generational change in American leadership.
It remains to be seen how Phillips’ challenge will impact the 2024 presidential race and whether he can gain traction among Democratic voters. As the primary season unfolds, all eyes will be on how the competition between Phillips and Biden plays out.
