Changing the Rules: The Key to Progressive Activism in 2024

Progressive activists are gearing up for the upcoming election, but the focus is not just on choosing the right candidates. The real key to achieving economic and social justice lies in changing the rules that govern our political system. From voting rights to campaign finance, the current rules in place hinder true progress and accountability.

The Democratic Party, in particular, plays a significant role in blocking progressive change at both the national and state levels. Dark money in primaries, lack of transparency, and voter registration hurdles are just a few examples of how the party rules work against the interests of the people. Despite efforts to push for reform within the party, obstacles remain in the path of true progressive change.

As the 2024 Democratic National Convention approaches, the importance of adopting resolutions that support reform cannot be overstated. Without these resolutions, the gains made by progressive forces in previous conventions may expire, leaving the field open to DNC insiders once again. Organizations like Our Revolution are mobilizing members to run for delegate positions and push for a progressive platform that addresses key issues like healthcare, climate change, and immigration.

At the federal level, changes within the Democratic Party are crucial to advancing the progressive agenda. With the Senate Democratic caucus considering filibuster reforms and other key issues, there is a potential for real change. By focusing on party reform and addressing the structural barriers that impede progress, there is hope for a future where governance is truly reflective of the people’s needs.

As the 2024 election season approaches, the call for changing the rules, not just the rulers, grows louder. By staying engaged in party processes, advocating for reform, and supporting candidates who prioritize progressive values, there is a real opportunity to shift the political landscape towards a more just and equitable future.
