Analysis of Asian American Political Affiliation and Voter Demographics

The political landscape among Asian American registered voters in the United States is diverse and nuanced, with about half of Vietnamese American voters leaning towards the GOP, the highest share among the five largest Asian origin groups in the country. This information comes from a recent Pew Research Center survey conducted from July 2022 to January 2023.

Overall, the majority of Asian American registered voters identify as Democrats or lean towards the Democratic Party, with 62% aligning with the Democratic Party and 34% with the Republican Party. However, there are variations among different Asian origin groups. For example, Filipino, Indian, and Korean American voters are predominantly Democratic, while Chinese American voters are slightly more divided, with a majority leaning Democratic.

The survey also revealed interesting insights into the demographics of Asian American voters. Younger Asian voters are more likely to lean Democratic, with 88% of those under 30 identifying with or leaning towards the Democratic Party. Women are also more likely to be Democratic voters compared to men, and education level plays a role in party affiliation, with lower-educated Asian voters more likely to support the GOP.

Additionally, the survey found that U.S.-born Asian voters are more likely to affiliate with the Democratic Party compared to foreign-born Asian voters. This trend is particularly pronounced among those who have lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years.

In terms of geographic distribution, California is home to the largest share of Asian American eligible voters, with about a third of the total Asian eligible voter population residing in the state. Other states with significant Asian American populations include New York, Texas, Hawaii, and New Jersey.

Overall, the survey provides valuable insights into the political preferences and demographics of Asian American voters in the United States, highlighting the diversity and complexity of this important voting bloc.
