The Republican Party’s Hypocrisy on Big Government: A Historical Perspective

Republicans’ Claim to Lincoln’s Legacy: A Closer Look at the Party’s Historical Connection to Big Government

As the election season heats up, Republicans continue to assert their party’s connection to the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln, often proclaiming that “the Republican Party is the party of Lincoln.” However, a deeper examination of history reveals a more complex relationship between the modern Republican Party and its historical roots.

Contrary to the current Republican rhetoric of small government and minimal intervention, the Republican Party of Lincoln’s era was actually the progenitor of the modern administrative state. Lincoln’s administration ushered in a series of groundbreaking federal interventions, including the first income tax, national banking system, and federally funded programs for higher education and social welfare.

The legacy of Lincoln’s party continued through President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, which further expanded the role of the federal government in addressing national crises. FDR’s programs, such as the Works Progress Administration and Social Security, stabilized the economy and provided relief for millions during the Great Depression.

In contrast to the current Republican emphasis on states’ rights and limited government, historical figures like Lincoln and Roosevelt understood the necessity of a well-organized federal bureaucracy in times of crisis. Their actions laid the foundation for the modern Democratic Party’s commitment to civil rights and social justice.

The failure of President Trump to grasp the history of federal government intervention in times of crisis has had devastating consequences, particularly evident in the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. The United States’ response to the crisis has exposed deep-seated flaws in the nation’s approach to governance and highlighted the importance of proactive, scientifically anchored federal leadership.

While the Republican Party continues to espouse anti-big government rhetoric, the historical record reveals a pattern of hypocrisy and inconsistency in their policies. From corporate welfare to military spending, Republicans have often embraced big government when it serves their interests, while opposing it in areas that benefit marginalized populations.

As the nation grapples with unprecedented challenges, the need for ethical, proactive federal government intervention has never been more apparent. By acknowledging the historical legacy of figures like Lincoln and Roosevelt, the Republican Party can chart a more honest and compassionate path forward, one that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens over partisan rhetoric.
