The Shifting Front Lines of America’s Cultural Clashes: How Education is Reshaping Politics

In recent years, America’s cultural battles have taken on a new shape, with a surge of progressive activism pushing the country’s culture to the left. This wave of progressivism has sparked a conservative backlash against everything from “critical race theory” to the alleged cancellation of Dr. Seuss.

These clashes may seem different from those of the past, but they are part of a broader trend that has been unfolding for the past half-century. American politics is realigning along cultural and educational lines, moving away from the class and income divisions that once defined the two major parties.

The power and influence of college graduates have grown significantly, leading to the instillation of increasingly liberal cultural norms within the Democratic Party. This shift has caused a portion of the party’s traditional working-class base to defect to the Republicans.

President Biden’s victory in 2020, where he won about 60 percent of college-educated voters, highlighted the significance of this voting bloc. The number of college graduates among voters has increased over the years, shaping the political landscape in new ways.

Despite the rise of college-educated voters and their growing liberalism, Democrats have not seen a proportional increase in strength. The party’s gains among college graduates and voters of color have been offset by losses among white voters without a degree.

The changing demographic makeup of the Democratic Party has created a self-fulfilling dynamic, where the growing power of liberal college graduates has alienated working-class voters, leaving college graduates as a larger share of the party.

The influence of universities and academia in fostering a new liberal culture cannot be overlooked. The concentration of left-leaning students and professors on campus has played a significant role in shaping progressive ideas and norms.

As the share of college graduates in the electorate continues to rise, they are forcing the Democratic Party to accommodate their interests and values. This has led to a gradual alienation of the party’s old working-class base.

Republicans have capitalized on this shift by appealing to conservative-leaning voters who feel disenfranchised by the actions of the college-educated left. The G.O.P.’s strategy, including leveraging racial divisions, has attracted white working-class voters who have felt alienated by the Democrats.

The future of American politics is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the influence of college-educated voters will continue to grow. As the share of college graduates in the population and the electorate increases, their impact on politics will only become more pronounced.

The rise of cultural liberalism and the shifting dynamics of American politics are reshaping the landscape in ways that will have lasting effects on the country’s future. The battle between progressive activism and conservative backlash is far from over, and the outcome will shape the direction of American politics for years to come.
