House Democrats Rally Around Michelle Vallejo in Bid to Unseat Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz
In a bold move, U.S. House Democrats are throwing their support behind Michelle Vallejo as she gears up to challenge Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz in the 15th congressional district. Vallejo, who previously ran for the seat in 2022 without success, has been selected to join the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red to Blue” program, which aims to bolster promising candidates taking on Republican incumbents.
Expressing her gratitude for the support, Vallejo stated, “South Texas deserves a champion that will fight for them every single day in Congress to lower costs for families, expand access to affordable and quality health care, protect Social Security and Medicare, and defend reproductive freedom.”
The decision to back Vallejo marks a shift from the previous election cycle, where national Democratic groups focused on safeguarding incumbents in neighboring districts. This time, however, the 15th district is seen as a prime opportunity for Democrats to flip a seat, with Vallejo emerging as a strong contender.
Joining Vallejo in the race is John Villarreal Rigney, a Pharr attorney who finished third in the 2022 Democratic primary in the district. The 15th district, stretching from Seguin to McAllen, is considered the most competitive in the state, making it a key battleground for both parties.
While De La Cruz has garnered significant support from Republicans, Vallejo’s platform, which includes advocating for affordable healthcare, protecting reproductive rights, and supporting local businesses, has resonated with many voters in the district. Democrats are banking on Vallejo’s grassroots appeal and progressive agenda to sway voters in their favor.
As the campaign heats up, both candidates are expected to focus on key issues such as healthcare, the economy, and immigration. With the backing of the DCCC and a strong fundraising effort, Vallejo is poised to give De La Cruz a run for her money in what promises to be a closely watched race in the upcoming election.
