Survey Reveals Immigrants’ Political Views on Immigration Issues

The KFF-Los Angeles Times Survey of Immigrants has revealed some interesting insights into the political views of immigrants in the United States. According to the survey, immigrants, including naturalized citizens, are more likely to align with the Democratic party and its positions on immigration issues than they are with the Republican party. However, a significant portion of immigrants feel that neither party truly represents their views.

The survey found that immigrants are twice as likely to say that the Democratic Party represents their political views better than the Republican Party. This sentiment is echoed among naturalized citizens as well. Additionally, immigrants believe that immigrants as a group have fared better under President Biden than under President Trump.

Despite these findings, a large percentage of immigrants do not lean towards either party. Many feel that politics do not dramatically impact their lives, and some are unsure of which party aligns with their views. However, those who do have a preference overwhelmingly favor the Democratic party and President Biden.

The survey also delved into other important issues, such as support for the DREAM Act, health coverage for undocumented immigrants, and enforcement of immigration laws. The majority of immigrants support the DREAM Act and allowing undocumented immigrants to sign up for government health insurance. However, opinions on the enforcement of immigration laws are more mixed, with some feeling that enforcement is too tough and others believing it is not tough enough.

Overall, the KFF-Los Angeles Times Survey of Immigrants provides valuable insights into the diverse views of immigrants on immigration policies and politics. The survey, which is the largest nationally representative survey of immigrants, was conducted between April 10-June 12, 2023, and included 3,358 immigrant adults. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2 percentage points for results based on the full sample.
