Georgia Primary Election Results: Trump Prosecutor Fani Willis and Judge Scott McAfee Win Key Races
The Georgia state primary elections on Tuesday were filled with excitement and surprises as candidates from various levels of government competed for the chance to represent constituents across the Peach State. This year’s election was particularly unique due to the redistricting that took place after a federal judge ruled that the legislative boundaries drawn in 2021 illegally diluted the voting power of Black communities.
One of the most closely watched races was the battle for Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, where incumbent U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop faced Republican challengers Chuck Hand and A. Wayne Johnson. Hand, who was involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021, ultimately secured a spot in the runoff election against Johnson.
In the 3rd Congressional District, Republican Rep. Drew Ferguson’s retirement left the seat up for grabs, with five Republicans and two Democrats vying for the nomination. The Democratic side saw Maura Keller emerge victorious, while the Republican runoff will be between Mike Dugan and Brian Jack.
Meanwhile, in the 6th Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Lucy McBath, a vocal advocate for gun control, easily defeated her Democratic challengers and is set to face Republican Jeff Criswell in the general election.
In the state legislative races, several incumbents were unseated by challengers, including Democrat Teri Anulewicz, who lost to Gabriel Sanchez in House District 42, and Republican Lauren Daniel, who was defeated by Noelle Kahaian in House District 81.
The most high-profile victory of the night came in the Trump election interference case, where Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee both secured wins in their respective races.
Overall, the Georgia primary elections showcased a mix of familiar faces and new contenders, setting the stage for an exciting general election in November.
