DNC Builds Team to Counter Third-Party and Independent Presidential Candidates
The Democratic National Committee is gearing up for a fierce battle against third-party and independent presidential candidates in the upcoming election, as they fear these candidates could act as spoilers and help re-elect Donald Trump. The DNC has assembled a team led by veteran Democratic operative Lis Smith to counter these candidates with aggressive communications, opposition research, and legal challenges.
The move comes as outside groups, including both Democratic and anti-Trump Republican organizations, are pooling resources to thwart third-party candidates. Democrats are particularly wary of the impact third parties could have in 2024, as they believe Trump’s support base could benefit from a divided opposition.
Key figures in the anti-third party coalition, such as Joe Trippi and former Sen. Claire McCaskill, emphasize the need to educate voters about the dangers of splitting the anti-Trump vote. They argue that third-party candidates could siphon crucial votes away from the Democratic nominee, potentially handing Trump a victory.
The coalition is also taking legal action against third-party candidates and their super PACs, alleging illegal coordination and violations of nonprofit tax status. MoveOn and other progressive groups are launching ad campaigns to dissuade young and progressive voters from supporting third-party candidates.
Meanwhile, anti-Trump Republican strategist Rick Wilson acknowledges the appeal of a multiparty democracy in theory but warns that in the current political climate, the priority must be to prevent a Trump victory. He stresses the importance of unity among anti-Trump voters, even if it means sacrificing alternative options in favor of a candidate who can defeat Trump.
As the battle against third-party candidates heats up, the DNC and its allies are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure a united front against Trump in the upcoming election.
