California Senate Candidates Clash Over Gaza, Homelessness, and Reproductive Rights

The race to succeed Sen. Dianne Feinstein in California took a fiery turn on Monday night at USC, as three congressional Democrats and a former-Dodger-turned-Republican candidate clashed over the war in Gaza and pitched their plans to address homelessness and protect reproductive freedoms.

Reps. Adam B. Schiff of Burbank, Katie Porter of Irvine, and Barbara Lee of Oakland took aim at former baseball star Steve Garvey, a newcomer to politics and supporter of former President Trump, during a heated debate hosted by Fox 11 News and Politico. The debate, the first of three scheduled before the March 5 primary election, saw the candidates spar over their visions for the state and their track records in office.

Schiff currently leads in the polls, with Porter and Garvey close behind. The debate may prove crucial in swaying the roughly 21% of undecided voters who could determine the outcome of the race.

One of the most contentious topics of the night was the war in Gaza, which exposed deep divides among the candidates. Schiff expressed unwavering support for Israel, while Lee called for a cease-fire and Porter advocated for a lasting bilateral agreement. The discussion reflected the anger and polarization among voters on the subject.

Garvey, despite his lack of political experience, held his own on stage but struggled to articulate his governing plans. His past support for Trump and refusal to take a firm stance on key issues like Israel and abortion could threaten his appeal to California voters.

With Schiff leading the pack, Porter and Garvey fought for second place, launching attacks on the longtime congressman. The debate also saw clashes over abortion rights, with Porter criticizing Schiff for listing it as an accomplishment on his campaign website in a post-Roe vs. Wade era.

Overall, the debate provided voters with a closer look at the candidates vying for one of the most coveted political posts in the state. The outcome of the race remains uncertain, with each candidate making their case to California voters in the lead-up to the primary election.
