Political Profile of U.S. Jews: Democratic, Liberal, and Views on Trump

Headline: Pew Research Center Study Shows Jews in the U.S. Remain Largely Democratic and Liberal, Disapprove of Trump

In a recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, it was revealed that Jews in the United States continue to be one of the most consistently liberal and Democratic groups in the population. The study, which included data from 2020, showed that seven-in-ten Jewish adults identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, with half describing their political views as liberal.

However, Orthodox Jews stand out as a small subgroup within the Jewish community, with 60% of them describing their political views as conservative. Additionally, 75% of Orthodox Jews identify as Republicans or lean toward the GOP, and 81% approved of former President Donald Trump’s job performance at the time of the survey.

While a majority of all Jews surveyed, including more than half of Democrats, considered Trump friendly toward the state of Israel, only about one-third believed he was friendly toward Jews in the United States. Orthodox Jews, on the other hand, overwhelmingly viewed Trump as friendly to Jewish Americans.

Overall, U.S. Jews remain largely Democratic and politically liberal, with about seven-in-ten identifying with or leaning toward the Democratic Party. The study also found that 50% of Jews describe their political views as liberal, significantly higher than those who identify as politically conservative.

The survey also delved into Jews’ views on Trump, revealing that about three-quarters of U.S. Jews disapproved of the job Trump was doing as president. Orthodox Jews were a notable exception, with 81% approving of Trump’s job performance.

Despite differing views on Trump, a majority of U.S. Jews believed he was friendly toward Israel, but less so toward Jews in the United States. Orthodox Jews once again stood out for their overwhelmingly positive views on Trump’s friendliness toward U.S. Jews.

The study highlights the diverse political views within the Jewish community in the U.S., with a majority remaining aligned with the Democratic Party and liberal values, while a smaller subgroup, particularly Orthodox Jews, lean more conservative and Republican.
