South Carolina Democrats Warn Against Voting for Nikki Haley in Republican Primary

South Carolina Democrats are gearing up for their party’s primary on Saturday, with a clear message to their voters: Nikki Haley is not the moderate Republican some may believe her to be. Party leaders have been highlighting Haley’s ultraconservative policies and labeling her as the “mother of the MAGA movement” in an effort to dissuade Democrats from participating in the Republican primary later this month.

Despite Haley’s strength with Democrats and independents in previous nominating contests, South Carolina Democrats are warning their voters not to support her in the upcoming primary. Colleen Condon, the state’s first nonbinary vice chair, shared her personal experience of having to sue Haley to get married, urging fellow Democrats not to participate in the Republican primary.

While some Democratic voters are considering crossing party lines to support Haley in the Republican primary, others are cautious about the potential consequences of such a move. Bill Samuels, a retiree in Beaufort, and Jon Coffey, a Democratic voter, expressed mixed feelings about the strategy, acknowledging the risks involved in elevating Haley as a candidate.

Republicans, on the other hand, are advocating for partisan primary elections to prevent voters from participating in the primary of a party they are not registered with. Drew McKissick, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, criticized the state’s open primary system and emphasized the importance of nominating a candidate who aligns with the party’s values.

As the primary election approaches, both parties are ramping up their efforts to secure support for their respective candidates. Democrats are working to paint Haley as a staunch conservative with a record of pushing ultraconservative policies, while Republicans are pushing for a more restrictive primary election process. The outcome of the primary will undoubtedly have significant implications for the general election, shaping the political landscape in South Carolina and beyond.
